Let’s talk a little bit about organics. “The organic movement is one of the biggest trends in the last few decades and is here to stay,” as Statista puts it. And, we agree with this sentiment. While many trends come and go, this movement has staying power because of the benefits that it offers. It’s not just a fad but has real reason to stick around. In 2022, “around 30 percent of U.S. consumers reported buying organic compared to conventionally produced products… The consumption value of organic packaged food in the United States is expected to grow from 21.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2021 to over 25 billion dollars by 2025.” But enough with the statistics, let’s turn our focus to the benefits of organics.
Organic farming is valuable. It can improve the quality of soil, lower pollution, reduce energy use, lessen soil erosion, and help with water conservation. In a blog from November 2023, we talked more about how growing organic is good for the soil. Soil that is treated with chemicals can become reliant on those chemicals which hurts the natural processes that keep the soil high in nutrients. By not using these chemicals you can help protect the soil’s natural processes and encourage a healthier soil. Using chemicals can also increase water pollution. Run-off of these products can end up in the water, polluting it. It’s also been shown that organics don’t require as much water since the soil is healthier, this helps to conserve this precious resource.
Not only do organic growing practices reduce how many chemicals end up in our environment, but also in our bodies. Conventional produce has more pesticide residue than produce grown organically. Grains grown organically have also been shown to have lower cadmium levels, “a toxic chemical naturally found in soils and absorbed by plants.” Organics tend to have more antioxidants. There are some other benefits as well, for example, meats, dairy products, and eggs from animals raised through organic feeding requirements tend to have more omega-3 fatty acids.
As you can see organic growing practices aren’t just beneficial for the environment, but also our health and well-being. At Worm Power, we’ve chosen to follow suit and create a product that is CDFA Organic certified. It helps support healthy soil and plants. We’re happy to help the environment and growers everywhere.
